REMASTER LINUX LIVE CD

What's remaster?

Remastering is the process of taking an audio file recorded and equalized for a smaller dynamic audio range such as a vinyl LP record, and increasing the volume of the recording without creating artifacts or distortion, using the original tapes before equalization is applied, to broaden the dynamic audio range for modern-day audio equipment. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remaster)

remastersys is a free software/open source (GPL) script for Linux distributions that allows a person to:

    * Create a customized Live CD/DVD of Ubuntu and derivatives.
    * Backup all the system, including user data to an installable Live CD/DVD.

Known problems

    * A Live CD/DVD created from a system with installed proprietary ATI or Nvidia drivers, when booted, will not load these drivers because casper (the ubuntu livecd boot routine) disables ati and nvidia proprietary drivers. [1]
    * When running from a wubi installation, remastersys seems to enter an infinite loop when trying to create an iso from that system.
    * failed to create base package list

Another tool to create live cd

1. Reconstructor
2. Ubuntu Customize Kit
3. Mklivecd (pclinuxOS, mandriva)
4. Revisor (fedora)
5. KIWI LiveDVD (opensuse)
6. Remastersys (this stuff very popular)
7. or refer to http://www.livecdlist.com/wiki/index.php/LiveCD_Creation_Resources for more distro live cd maker.

Tips:
I found many factor when remastering livecd fail especially have been struggling to install remasters - they all fail at the bootloader installation. A factor to avoid are:

1. KDE = most KDE cannot remaster well. If someone has done in KDE, it's only 5% from linux user.

2. proprietary ATI or Nvidia drivers

3. System/repo broken (fix it before remaster!! = eg: apt-get -f install,  dpkg --configure - and etc)

4. 2 in 1 or 3 in 1 gnome OS. You have Kde, xfce or etc in your gnome!

5. You have install something in Wine (game or windows software)

6. Language = Only use English!

That's all I guess. I have finished second edition of my remaster livecd. First stable version was based on gOS space ubuntu (1.4 gigs) and second version based on Ultimate Editon 2008 fully update Jun 11 2008 (1.8 gigs)..
